Pick up any shaft spec sheet and you'll find a kick point rating: low, mid, or high. It's one of the most quoted and least understood terms in equipment. Kick point is a real property with a real effect on ball flight — but the label on the band is a rough summary of something more complicated, and its effect is smaller than the marketing implies.
The definition
Kick point — also called bend point — is the region of the shaft that bends the most when it's loaded during the swing. Shafts don't flex uniformly: designers distribute stiffness along the length, making some sections stiffer than others, and the zone of maximum bend can sit closer to the tip (the clubhead end), the middle, or the butt (the grip end).
- Low kick point: the shaft bends most near the tip. Through impact, the tip releases and 'kicks' the clubhead upward, adding dynamic loft. Result: higher launch, and typically a touch more spin.
- Mid kick point: bend concentrated in the middle. The neutral option — moderate launch, and where most stock shafts live.
- High kick point: the shaft bends most near the grip end, leaving the tip section stiffer. The tip resists adding loft through impact. Result: lower launch, typically less spin, and a more stable feel for aggressive swings.
What it does to launch and trajectory
The mechanism is dynamic loft. As the shaft unloads through impact, a softer tip section lets the clubhead pass slightly ahead of the hands' line, presenting more loft to the ball at the moment of contact. A stiffer tip section resists that, keeping delivered loft closer to the club's static loft. That's the entire effect: kick point shifts launch angle a little, and spin follows in the same direction.
Keep the size of the effect in perspective. Moving between kick points typically changes launch by a degree or so — meaningful at the margins, but far smaller than the effect of loft, strike location on the face, or your angle of attack. Kick point is a fine-tuning variable a fitter reaches for after the big levers (head, loft, shaft weight, and flex) are set, not a headline fix for a golfer who launches it badly.
How kick point interacts with flex and tip stiffness
Kick point doesn't exist in isolation — it's one slice of the shaft's overall bend profile, and it interacts with flex constantly. Two stiff-flex shafts can play completely differently if one is stiff in the butt with a soft tip (launches higher) and the other is softer in the butt with a firm tip (launches lower). This is why fitters talk less about 'kick point' and more about tip stiffness: the tip section is the part of the profile that most directly controls delivered loft and how stable the head feels through impact.
Tip stiffness also matters for face control. A soft tip lets the head both rise and rotate more freely, which can help a slower swinger square the face — and can feel unstable to a fast, late-loading swinger, who will usually deliver tighter dispersion with a firmer tip. Matching the tip to the player's speed and release is a bigger part of high-end shaft fitting than the low/mid/high label suggests.
Marketing labels vs. measured reality
Here's the part the spec sheet doesn't tell you: kick point labels aren't standardized. There's no industry-wide test that certifies a shaft as 'low kick,' and the physical distance between one shaft's maximum-bend region and another's is small — the label compresses a full stiffness profile into one word chosen by the marketing department. One brand's mid can bend like another brand's high.
The practical consequence for golfers: don't buy a shaft off the label. 'High kick point' on the band tells you the designer's intent, not the measured behavior, and certainly not how it will interact with your delivery.
Who benefits from each kick point
As a general pattern — and it is only a pattern, subject to everything above:
- Low kick point suits golfers who struggle to launch the ball: slower swing speeds, sweepers of the ball, players whose drives fall out of the air. The added dynamic loft and spin keep the ball airborne longer.
- Mid kick point is the sensible default for the widest range of golfers, which is why most stock shafts are built there.
- High kick point suits faster swingers who generate plenty of launch and spin on their own and want to bring flight down — the classic spinny, ballooning driver miss — and players with an aggressive transition who want a stable tip.
Note what's absent from that list: any rule tied to handicap. Kick point fit follows delivery, not skill level. A 20-handicap with a fast, steep swing may need the 'better player' profile; a scratch golfer with a smooth 85 mph swing may launch best with a soft tip. How a fitting identifies your kick point
No fitter starts a session by asking which kick point you want. They start with a launch monitor baseline — ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and dispersion — and diagnose from the numbers. If your launch and spin sit outside the efficient window for your ball speed after loft and head are right, bend profile becomes one of the levers: the fitter swaps in a shaft with a different tip section and the monitor shows whether launch actually moved.
