There's a recurring debate on every golf forum: 'Should I get fitted for my driver or my irons first?' The driver fitting discussion gets louder because the driver is the club golfers obsess over — distance is visible, braggable, and immediate. But the fitting itself has a specific logic, and understanding it helps you decide whether the session is the right call before you write the cheque.
What actually happens at a driver fitting
A driver fitting tests a combination of variables — shaft flex, shaft weight, head loft, face angle, and CG weighting — against the real data from your swing. It's not a shopping consultation and it's not a lesson. The fitter is finding the spec that produces the best real-world outcomes from the swing you already have.
- Baseline with your current driver. Before anything changes, you'll hit several shots with your existing club while the fitter reads ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, carry distance, and dispersion pattern. This is the number everything else is measured against — every subsequent change either beats the baseline or doesn't.
- Shaft testing. Shaft weight and flex are tested first because they affect how the head behaves at impact. Same head, different shafts, different ball flight. The fitter works through a matrix: heavier/lighter, stiffer/softer, different flex profiles (mid-kick vs. tip-stiff). Most fittings test 4–8 shaft options before settling on a direction.
- Head and loft testing. Once a shaft direction is identified, the fitter pairs it with different head models. Driver loft is tested in 0.5° increments — a 9° loft produces very different spin from a 10.5° with the same swing. Adjustable weights (draw bias, neutral, fade bias) are tested for direction control.
- Settings and adjustability. Modern drivers have 8–16 hosel settings. The fitter confirms whether the standard position is your best position or whether you're leaving 5–10 yards in the air by not adjusting the standard setting.
- The recommendation with data. The winning combination is presented alongside the comparison data — ball speed gain, spin reduction, tighter dispersion. A good fitter shows you the evidence, not just the conclusion.
What the launch monitor is actually measuring
Three numbers matter most in a driver fitting: ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate. Together they determine carry distance and where the ball lands. Understanding them lets you follow the session in real time rather than just watching numbers change.

High spin is the most common distance killer found in driver fittings. An amateur producing 3,400 rpm — a very common pattern with a stock regular shaft — is leaving 15–25 yards in the air. A lower-spinning shaft or a head with a lower-spin CG position often closes the gap without changing anything about the swing.
How long does a driver fitting take?
A proper driver fitting runs 45–75 minutes at a reputable shop. Fewer than 30 minutes doesn't allow enough shaft combinations to be tested — that's a shortlist, not a fitting. Significantly longer than 90 minutes usually means the session is exploring premium options rather than finding your optimal spec. A shop that books 30-minute driver slots is time-boxing the session in a way that limits shaft testing.
Is a driver fitting worth it?
It depends on one thing more than anything else: whether you're planning to buy a new driver anyway. If the answer is yes, getting fitted first is always the right call — you're spending $400–$600 either way, and the fitted version is based on your actual spin rate and launch angle rather than a guess. If you're happy with your current driver and it's producing an acceptable ball flight, the fitting won't reveal anything new to act on.
What a driver fitting is not good for: fixing an inconsistent swing. If your ball flight changes dramatically from shot to shot — some go left, some right, distances vary widely — a fitting will struggle to find a consistent pattern to optimise. Driver or irons first? The honest answer
Golf forums largely agree on this, even if nobody says it loudly: for most golfers, an iron fitting has a bigger impact on score. The driver produces one shot per hole — fourteen on a par-72. Irons and wedges produce the rest of the shots, including the ones that determine whether you're putting from 15 feet or 40 feet. Lie angle errors on every iron push every approach left or right; distance gapping errors mean you're choosing between clubs that fly the same yardage. These are scoring problems. Poor driver distance is, for most golfers, a bragging problem.
That said: if your driver is producing a damaging, repeatable pattern — a consistent slice that costs you balls or forces a penalty — getting it fitted first is defensible. A driver that loses balls costs strokes just as surely as bad irons. The practical answer is to fit whichever club is causing the most costly, repeatable misses.
