The confusion comes from the fact that the golf industry uses it in two genuinely different ways, and they get blended together in ads and forum threads. One is about forgiveness. The other is about set matching. They share the physics and almost nothing else.
Meaning one: clubhead MOI — the forgiveness number
Clubhead MOI measures how much the head resists twisting around its center of gravity when force is applied off-center. Strike a ball toward the toe and the impact tries to rotate the face open; strike it toward the heel and the face wants to close. A head with higher MOI rotates less under that same off-center force — so the face stays closer to square through impact, and the shot flies closer to where you aimed it.
Designers raise MOI by moving mass away from the center of the head — toward the perimeter, and low and back. That's the entire logic behind the shapes you see in a fitting bay: oversized driver footprints with rear weight pads, cavity-back irons that hollow out the center and redistribute the steel to the edges, and mallet putters that stretch weight far behind the face. What high MOI does to your mishits
The practical payoff of clubhead MOI is ball speed retention. Every off-center strike transfers less energy to the ball than a centered one, but a high-MOI head loses noticeably less: the face twists less, contact stays more efficient, and the same toe strike that costs a wide margin of carry distance with a low-MOI head costs a much smaller one with a forgiving head. The second effect is directional — less face twist means toe and heel strikes start closer to the target line, so your dispersion pattern tightens even when your strike pattern doesn't.

MOI matching is a set-building method that makes this number identical for every club in the bag, so your 5-iron demands the same effort from your body as your 9-iron. It's the main alternative to traditional swing weight matching.
The distinction matters because swing weight is a static balance measurement around a fixed 14-inch fulcrum — a convention that works well but doesn't fully account for length. In a conventional swing-weight-matched set, the longer clubs actually require slightly more effort to swing than the shorter ones. MOI matching corrects for that: head weights are adjusted so every club, long or short, presents the same rotational resistance. Advocates argue this is why some players strike their short irons well but struggle progressively more as the clubs get longer — the long clubs are, in a measurable sense, harder to swing.

Neither method is objectively right.
