There's a grain of truth there — chip shots and flop shots do involve feel that launch monitors can't fully capture. But full-swing wedge shots (your 80, 100, and 120-yard shots) are as data-driven as any other club in the bag, and the variables that go wrong in a wedge setup — gapping, bounce, grind — can silently cost three or four strokes per round without ever feeling like the club's fault.
What a wedge fitting actually does is confirm five things that affect every shot inside 130 yards: the loft spacing between your wedges, the bounce angle that matches your swing and turf, the grind that suits your short-game style, the shaft, and lie angle. If any one of those is wrong, your short game compensates — and you get inconsistent distance control, chunked pitches on firm lies, or shots that balloon on you from the rough.
What a wedge fitting covers: the five variables

Loft gapping: the first thing any fitter checks
Modern iron sets often come with stronger (lower-number) lofts than sets from 10–15 years ago — a "7-iron" in many distance-iron sets launches closer to what a traditional 6-iron does. That means the pitching wedge in a current iron set may sit at 43–46° of loft, not the traditional 48°. If a golfer then picks up an off-the-rack 52° gap wedge and a 56° sand wedge, the gaps between clubs look fine on paper — but the 8–9° jump from PW to GW can leave a 25-yard dead zone: shots where a full swing goes too far but a half-swing is awkward and inconsistent.
A fitter starts with your pitching wedge's actual loft (not the stamped number) and works outward. The goal is consistent carry gaps of 10–15 yards between each wedge — a 4–6° loft gap achieves this for most swing speeds. If you shoot in the 80s and regularly face 80–120 yard shots, solving your gapping is probably the highest-leverage change a wedge fitting can make.
Bounce: the variable most often chosen wrong
Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole. High bounce keeps the club from digging — it glides through turf. Low bounce allows the leading edge to get closer to the ground, which helps on tight lies and when opening the face.
The problem is that most golfers choose wedges by loft and feel without considering bounce — and then wonder why they chunk pitches off tight fairways (wrong bounce for the lie) or skull shots off soft turf (wrong bounce for the swing type).

Grind: what changes at the sole beyond bounce
Grind refers to material removed from the heel, toe, or trailing edge of the sole — shaping it for specific shot types. It's an extension of bounce: two wedges with the same bounce angle can behave very differently depending on the grind.
- Full sole / low grind (e.g., Vokey F-grind): maximum leading-edge exposure; for players who open the face frequently for flops and bunker shots on firm turf.
- Heel-relief grind (e.g., Vokey S-grind): removes material from the heel and toe for versatility — works well for golfers who play multiple shot shapes without fully committing to one style.
- Full-face / C-grind: takes material from the heel for extreme face-open positions; for skilled players with varied short-game shots.

A fitter evaluating grind watches your divot pattern (direction, depth), asks about course conditions, and observes how you chip and pitch around the practice green. The answer isn't always what's stamped on the tour pro's wedge — it's what works for how you swing.
Does wedge fitting use a launch monitor?
Yes and no — and this is the source of the "more feel than numbers" debate. A wedge fitting uses a launch monitor for full-swing shots to confirm carry distances, confirm loft gapping in real yardages (not just degrees), and measure spin rates from the rough. Spin from the rough matters: a wedge with fewer grooves or grooves that are worn down spins differently from rough than fairway, and the data catches it.
But for chips, pitches, and bunker shots, a good fitter shifts away from the monitor and watches the shot. What they're looking for: how cleanly the sole exits the turf, whether the leading edge catches on certain lies, whether the ball flight and spin are consistent from 30–50 yards. Launch monitor data on a 30-yard chip is not useful. Your fitter's eye for turf interaction and divot pattern is.
"More feel than numbers" is partly right — but only for the greenside portion of the session. Full-swing wedge shots at 80–130 yards are measured the same way as any iron shot.
Is a wedge fitting worth it? Honest answer by score
- If you shoot over 100: Wedge fitting is lower priority than driver/iron fitting or a lesson. Your short game errors at this stage are more likely to be technique than equipment mismatch. That said, loft gapping is a quick fix that helps any level — if you suspect a dead zone in your yardages, that's worth 30 minutes with a fitter.
- If you shoot 85–100: This is where wedge fitting starts paying back clearly. You're playing enough full-swing wedge shots per round that distance gaps and spin inconsistency show up in your score. Confirming your bounce and gapping for your local conditions is a legitimate scoring investment.
- If you shoot under 85: Get fitted. You're playing 20–30 wedge shots per round from varied lies and distances, and you're consistent enough for equipment mismatch to be isolatable. Wedge setup errors — especially bounce mismatch for your course conditions — are measurable and fixable.
- If you're buying new wedges: Always get fitted first, or at minimum confirm your iron set's actual PW loft so you can gap correctly. Buying wedges by loft and feel alone is the most common equipment mistake in the game.

Can you adjust existing wedges instead of buying new ones?
Yes — lie angle can be bent 2–3° on most steel-headed wedges at a club repair shop, which addresses directional issues on full shots. Regripping to a different grip size or texture is a $15–$25 fix that changes feel and wrist action on chips. However, bounce and grind cannot be changed without grinding the sole, which is a job for a skilled club builder (not all shops offer it).
